Automation ROI: where to start

The three workflows most businesses should automate first, and why.

Automation ROI: where to start

Most businesses don't have an automation problem, they have a prioritisation problem. Everything looks automatable once you start looking, which is exactly why most automation projects stall: too many candidates, no clear place to start.

We tell clients to start with the workflow that's manual, repeated daily, and error-prone when a human does it under time pressure. That combination is what makes automation pay for itself fastest. Lead intake and CRM updates are the most common example: someone copying form submissions into a spreadsheet, then into a CRM, then emailing a follow-up, several times a day.

The second place to look is anywhere two systems don't talk to each other, invoicing and inventory, bookings and payroll, support tickets and order status. These gaps usually get patched with a person doing manual data entry between tools, which is expensive and quietly error-prone.

The third is reporting: anything where someone spends a recurring block of time assembling a status update or dashboard by hand. It rarely feels urgent to fix, which is exactly why it tends to survive unautomated for years after everything else has been addressed.

Start with one of those three, measure the hours it used to take, and the case for the next automation project usually makes itself.
